I am not ignoring anything. If you look at the data, you see that at first government employment was cut. When it became clear that austerity was not making the situation better but making it worse, they promptly switched gears.

The low point was in 1982 where total federal employment was at 4.972 million. In 1983, it was up to 5.039 million, or an increase of 68k jobs. Of that, there was an increase of 16,000 uniformed military. And it increased every year after that. Oddly enough, it was in 1983 that the economy started to improve.

Now, I am not claiming that this was the only thing done. But it certainly was part of the overall package.
