And what do you know? Plugging it in and unplugging it has resulted in it working! The TV shows what's on the PC.
So.....my only question now - the sound is coming out of the PC system, is there a way to make it go through the HDMI cable so that the sound comes out of the TV sound system??
The sound should be available on the HDMI signal. The fact your TV didn't recognize the video until you plugged and unplugged makes me think you might need to reboot the TV. While the power is on, unplug it from the wall, wait about 15 seconds plug it back in and then turn it on with the remote. If that doesn't work there may be a setting in the TV menu that needs to be set to enable audio on HDMI. Just guessing but hopefully this may help.

EDIT: Oops just saw your follow-up post. Glad it's working now!
