"references to a deistic "god" were just sops to cerberus."

The desire of the framers of the Constitution to avoid sectarian wrangling and to move toward inclusiveness does not mean that the explicit grounding of the principals of Human equality and universal rights in THE Creator God was some kind of throw away line.

"Nobody said it was a throwaway line except you."

Actually what you did say was much much worse than that. You implied that the framers were dishonest.

SOP TO CERBERUS:
a concession or bribe to conciliate a person otherwise liable to be troublesome

Origin of SOP TO CERBERUS

after Cerberus, 3-headed dog guarding the entrance to Hades; from the sop given him by Aeneas in Vergil's Aeneid (6,417) to engage his attention while Aeneas slipped by — more at Cerberus

The truth is that Locke was a devout Christian who defended divine revelation and developed his theories from a distinctly Christian perspective as did Rutherford and other Reformation theologians before him. You can pretend that they were all atheists wolves in sheeps clothing if you wish but that doesn't make it so. Atheism cannot ground universal rights and freedoms from within itself. The Declaration of Independence was the theological justification for the American Revolution against Tyrannical Rulers who had failed to faithfully execute their God ordained duty to rule their people justly, not as you claim: a convenient lie.
