"The whole point of the American Revolution was to create a society where tyrants could not use Divine authority to impose their will on the people. In order to successfully usher in the humanist laws of the rights of man, they needed to use the same pretense to a higher authority that tyrants everywhere had used throughout time. Many of the Founding Fathers were religious in the sense that Einstein was religious. They found their ignorance awesome--as all thoughtful people do. The main man (Mr. Jefferson) re-wrote the New Testament--because he knew they were NOT God's words--but the words of men. He knew this superstition would flourish for some time to come and he wanted to remove the uncivilised portions (he removed most of it), and leave what was fitting for a nation where people counted...and where iexorable laws protected that civilization from decay." How quickly they forget.
