Council approves plastic plant rezoning

Smiths Falls Record News
By Stacey Roy

In a five for, one against recorded vote, Smiths Falls Council rezoned the former Hershey plant as Light Industrial - Special Exception (Holding) to allow for a plastics melting plant on Hershey Drive.

Coun. Joe Gallipeau was the lone vote against staff's recommendation. He felt there should be a rezoning for only the 60,000 square feet within the former peanut building Summit Energy proposes to use and not the entire building. Furthermore, he asked for a time limit of perhaps three years to be imposed on the rezoning, so the town would maintain some control in the interest of public safety should the company not meet expectations.

These recommendations were voted down by the majority of Council who felt the holding zone provision would provide the municipality with sufficient protection throughout the approval process. The town's approval tonight (Dec. 15) allows Summit Energy to apply for an Environmental Assessment process through the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. More to come.
