Merced, will host almost all the OS's, (Sun's Solaris DEC's,HP's, IBM's,SCO's unix, NT...)
Esentially with Merced all RISC processor camps dissappear (It is becoming increasingly VERY EXPENSIVE to develop and manufacture CPU's and to continue the CPU treadmill -- a few billion dollars for each generation, Also going against economies of scale, makes it very prohibitive for anyone to come up with a CPU). The battle will still continue between solaris and NT for the enterprise, and Java/Windows/Windows NT for the desktop. for a few more years after 99, until a clear winner emerges.
Merced, with its multitude of support is signalling that the CPU wars are over.
