DGLY Cameras being tested in pilot program for Indianapolis Police Department

INDIANAPOLIS - Just one day after President Obama called on Congress to fund 50,000 body cameras for police officers around the country, the Indianapolis Metro Police Department decided to roll out a pilot program to test the cameras in Marion County.

And Monday is the first day for a dozen officers to begin wearing them.

The six-week pilot program will involve just a few police officers because deploying hundreds of cameras needed for IMPD's force is a huge cost. Despite their value in cases, there are also drawbacks, Sgt. Kendale Adams said.

"You have the officer's version and the citizen's version -- and some would argue both versions could be biased. So the camera adds an unbiased account of what really happened," Adams said. "The body camera allows us to see it as it happens."

Twelve officers on different shifts will use the cameras. The department will then evaluate the program to see if it will deploy 700 cameras to its patrol officers at a cost ranging from $650,000 up to $22 million.
