New Oak Communications Receives Approval to Export 56-bit Encryption

BusinessWire, Monday, December 15, 1997 at 13:16

ACTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 1997--New Oak
Communications, Inc., the leading provider of Infrastructure for
Extranets, announced today that it received the highest level of
export approval from the U.S. Department of Commerce for its NOC 4000
Extranet Access Switch. The approval enables New Oak to export 56-bit
encryption to almost any country without an individual validated
license. By receiving government approval coincident with first
customer shipment, New Oak will not have to delay international
shipments waiting for future approval.
"This broad export approval from the U.S. Department of Commerce
ensures that our customers will benefit from the strongest encryption
which can be broadly exported from the U.S.," said Mike Feinstein, New
Oak vice president of product marketing. "New Oak is further committed
to working with the Department of Commerce to maintain the highest
level of export approval permitted by law so that our customers can
always take advantage of the strongest allowable encryption."
New Oak is aggressively pursuing international distribution
worldwide. This approval guarantees that products shipped to
international customers will include, at minimum, 56-bit encryption.
The approval does not preclude New Oak from shipping higher levels of
encryption with a license. New Oak's NOC 4000 ships to all U.S.
customers with 128-bit encryption.

About the NOC 4000

The NOC 4000 is a market and technology breakthrough for remote
access over the Internet. Called an Extranet Access Switch, the NOC
4000 marks a paradigm shift for remote access from the complexity of
expensive remote access servers, dial-up ports, and leased lines to a
single, comprehensive, easily managed device that is optimized for
Extranet access. The NOC 4000 combines cutting-edge technology in
VPNs, tunneling, encryption, bandwidth management, firewall security,
and routing in a single hardware platform. With the NOC 4000, each
user gets a Personal Extranet which provides customized access to
networked services and resources based on the unique needs of that
user.
