re: I wonder how many other chat sites or other web sites are using all flash based servers?

Good question. I doubt there is a way to determine the correct answer.

I wonder how many of those "other chat sites or other web sites" have their server sitting in the office of their one and only "code monkey"?

I also wonder how much it cost for the people-cycles it took to support the "new features" with an old, underpowered server?

I don't know anything about the financial status of Knight Sac Media, so I don't know how much they could have afforded back then. But, financing is readily available for most businesses with potential.

What I *do* know is that for a business to succeed they need the right tools. It seems to me that the additional load should have been predicted prior to implementing the "new features", so a new server should have been installed earlier in the game.

And, if the performance hit of the "new features" was a surprise, there should have been an early response to the situation.

As it turned out, the performance was so poor ... for an extended period of time ... that there were a lot of existing users who got fed up with SI and left.

And, there were probably several potential new users who didn't stick around because they had to wait too long during their initial visit to SI.

There's no telling how much revenue was lost because of those issues.

It's all 20-20 hindsight, but I hope SI management and ownership learned something.

Oh, and BTW ....

Censorship sux !!

Sure is a pretty day.
