Any proof that it wasn't? Given how easy it is for anyone to legally purchase a weapon from a private seller, that is how he likely got it. But, there is no way to know, one way or another. I think the gun has been traced to Georgia, where it was sold at a pawn shop some 20 years ago. Apparently it never was in the possession of a licensed gun seller since then. So there is no way to trace if it were legally traded or not.

The system is full of holes. That is by design.
