Chemical Makers Unduly Sold Off Amid Oil Slump -- Market Talk
8:13 EST - Cowen says US chemical stocks have gotten unfairly roughed up of late. "The misperception that falling oil will sharply impact ethylene margin has created a downdraft" in the sector, with the size of the declines "unwarranted as data shows meaningful, but far-less-drastic, margin compression than the shares imply." The investment bank specifically highlights LyondellBasell (LYB), saying, "Substantive upside exists even in a world with $60/barrel Brent." As that global oil benchmark has seen its price nearly halve since June, LYB fell as much as 38% in that time, "well in excess of our estimated earnings reduction for 2015 of 17% using a $60/bbl Brent price for oil." LYB, inactive premarket, has bounced 16% from last week's bottom.
