Government Accelerates Y2K Push____
U.S. government agencies are making progress with their year
2000 code conversion, but the government is moving up a
number of target dates in order to get the massive job done
on time, according to a report issued yesterday by the
Office of Management and Budget.

The OMB report found that 27% of 8,589 critical systems are
now year 2000 compliant, compared with 19% in the previous
quarter. Total costs, however, increased to $3.9 billion
from last quarter's estimate of $3.8 billion.

Nearly all federal agencies have completed year 2000
assessments and are now renovating code, according to the
report. Still, about 5% of agencies are still completing
assessments. The Federal Aviation Administration, the report
notes, has assessed only 38% of its systems, not including
an additional 245 critical systems just identified by that
agency.

The OMB decided code-renovation efforts should be
accelerated to make sure adequate time is available for
testing. Governmentwide milestones for code renovation have
been pushed up to September 1998 from December 1998; the
implementation target date has been moved to March 1999 from
November 1999. The OMB plans to help struggling agencies
with additional funding where needed and withhold funds for
unrelated IT investments at other agencies. --Bruce
