It's a very long detour supplying Kaliningrad by ship from Crimea. Other northern Russian ports freeze up in the winter.

Crimea has been a part of Russia since Catherine the Great stole it from the Ottoman Empire. I'm no fan of Putin but there's a lot of history which went into Russia taking Crimea back.

I'd be willing to bet Russia has more claim to Crimea under international law than Kaliningrad.
