I think forest growth was retarded by the low level of CO2. That's what the finding of carbon starvation means.

As for the ID, it's funny that human civilization arose on earth just when CO2 levels had dropped to a starvation or near starvation level for plants and just when stored fossil fuels were thus at a maximum. Just lucky, I guess.
