U.S. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid broke a number of ribs as well as bones in his face in an accident while exercising at his home yesterday in Nevada, his office said in a statement.

Reid, 75, spent the night at University Medical Center in Las Vegas as a precaution, according to his office. The accident occurred while he was exercising at his home in Henderson. An exercise band “snapped and hit him and caused him to fall,” Adam Jentleson, Reid’s spokesman, said in an e-mail.

The five-term senator is completing eight years as Senate majority leader. He will be minority leader in the new congressional session that begins Jan. 6.

Reid “will return to Washington this weekend and be in the office Tuesday as the Senate prepares to reconvene,” the statement said. “His doctors expect a full recovery.”

This is one of several hospital visits for Reid in the past 10 years. He suffered a mild stroke in August 2005 while in his hometown of Searchlight, Nevada. He was taken to a hospital in October 2012 with minor injuries when his motorcade was involved in an accident in Las Vegas. In May 2011, Reid fell while running in Washington and dislocated his right shoulder.
