First, you should keep in mind that he had made the decision to go to med school before his accident. One can hardly blame a man who is paralyzed and completes med school at the top of his class after being paralyzed (I believe the first at Harvard to do so), then decides he has a higher purpose in life. That kind of injury, I'm sure, would cause anyone to re-think his priorities.

Secondly, you may want to consider that he was first hired by a liberal news magazine, The New Republic, run by none other than Michael Kinsley. Krauthammer admits that at that time he was a liberal, which is how he ended up working for Mondale.

The bottom line is that he "evolved", as most of us do, to want to use his intellect more purposefully in his life. Psychiatry may be a fine profession, but why would anyone limit himself to that when he could be one of the most influential political writers in the nation's history?

Krauthammer has done precisely that. Every president pays attention -- with the possible exception of Chauncey, who I think doesn't pay attention to ANYONE. And he does influence policy, whether or not people realize it.

I wouldn't knock him if you don't know anything about him.
