It is possible to write opeds without being great. It is possible for truly great men to write opeds. That really isn't the metric or any metric at all.

The question is how influential is he. And the answer is "very". It is true that Chauncey probably ignores Krauthammer, just as he does pretty much everyone from whom he could learn, most presidents over the last 40 years have paid attention to what he had to say.

Krauthammer is easily the most brilliant news commentator in the country today. There is really not anyone who comes close -- people like Krugman and Brooks aren't even in the same tier as Krauthammer. And even George Will, who is in the same class, doesn't have Krauthammer's ability.

If any writer on politics can achieve greatness, Krauthammer has done so.
