My comments were only about ETFs... I have very little knowledge and zero experience with ETNs and can't speak to them... I do think regular ETFs have a place for many retail investors who don't have the time or are unwilling/unable to perform adequate DD on individual equities -- I think regular ETFs are often preferable to mutual funds for example -- especially actively managed mutuals, but I have nothing but disdain for leveraged ETFs...

The discussion I was replying to was about leveraged ETFs, not ETNs -- I admit I'm not entirely clear on the differences as I prefer to do my own DD and buy/sell individual stocks... though I do recall some mention of UWTI -- but I didn't look at it specifically and could not have told you if it were an ETF or ETN -- it's just not in my investment galaxy's radar.

In general, I would avoid using any "leverage" in investing that involves credit/debt while the threat of deflation exists as it has since 2008 in the US.
