Extreme weather can be defined in a number of ways. The simplest is to just count up the number of record weather events. Temperature highs and lows, drought days, rainfall records, etc.

As to the hurricanes, that was answered. If you mean cyclones, yeah there are more of them. And when they do develop, they tend to be more powerful. To the point that there is talk of extending the categories. One to five just isn't as useful any more. If you want the narrow definition of a hurricane as a cyclonic storm off the east coast of the US, those numbers have held steady or even decreased. Some posters have been dancing in the aisles over the latter, nitwit definition. It is a nitwit definition because whether or not the US gets hit is dependent on a number of factors that isn't related to the number of storms. There are years with relatively few storms, but a large percentage makes landfall, and years where the converse is true.
