DRAM losses mount in Taiwan
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The financial woes continue for Taiwan's DRAM makers.

Citing the continued downturn in DRAM pricing and other factors, Hsinchu-based Texas Instruments-Acer Inc. has widened its 1997 net loss forecast to more than $91.6 million.

TI-Acer--a joint DRAM venture between TI of Dallas and Taiwan's Acer Inc.--recently said its 1997 losses would amount to about $58 million.

Today, Hsinchu-based Powerchip Semiconductor Corp.--a joint DRAM manufacturing venture between Taiwan's Umax Group and Japan's Kanematsu Corp. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp.--said it projects a pre-tax loss of $31.2 million.

Powerchip, however, projects an after-tax profit between $14 million to $15 million, due in part to a recent devaluation in Taiwan's currency, analysts said.

Another memory maker, Hsinchu-based Mosel-Vitelic Inc., last week revised its 1997 sales and profit forecast downward by 30.3% and 42%, respectively.
