Jozef - Re: "Even if the market grows 15% next year, it will not help. That's only a little over 10M chips. "

You must have dropped a "0". This year's market is about 80,000,000 CPUs and Intle has indicated the current run rate for 1998 should be 100,000,000 CPUs - assuming no recession/depression due to S. E. Asia, El Nino, etc.

Intel's ASPs will begin to grow in the latter half of 1998.

As for Killer Apps - this is a figment from the past - when people needed an excuse to buy a PC. Now, a PC is as much a part of everyday business as a notepad and pencil. The requirement for a PC is a given.

Today, there are hundreds of applications that are useful to everybody - and it is the collection of tens of thousands of applications to choose from (all running on x86 processors) that is the "Killer Application Pool" - reach in and you will find your own personal Killer App.

Moreover, even Windows 95 allows mutiple applications to be run simultaneously/concurrently so the need for higher power CPUs to keep all these applications going "nearly" simultaneously will help drive users to more CPU power.

Ask yourself how many 386 and 486 CPUs were sold this year.

Paul
