The Bush "torture memos" sought exemption from the Geneva Conventions for such facilities.

Alberto Gonzales was responsible for arguing this; they were written by John Yoo, then deputy assistant attorney general. Yoo concluded that federal laws prohibiting the use of torture did not apply to U.S. practices overseas.

i-node's claim that the terrorist was attempting to "sucker the American left" in indicating the torture which took place at Abu Ghraib was a reason for his radicalization seems dubious, more the sort of pronouncement of a right-wing partisan wacko. I'd like to see some evidence to back this interesting theory, because it seems particularly nutty to me. Purely the product of a twisted partisan mind.
