Very familiar with the Tarahumaras. Their running prowess is related to their deer-hunting methods. They run them down, and while this might seem crazy, there is a method to the madness. Deer cannot sweat, but can run very fast. In doing so, they have to stop every now and then to cool off. Humans can sweat and can run without interruption for a long time. The Tarahumaras simply chase the deer until they overheat and cannot move at all.

So the best runners are the best hunters and that's how nature takes care of the ones who have adapted.

I lived in Northern Mexico until I8 or so.

Have been deep into the Sierra Madre (where they run) innumerable times.

Have taken the Copper Canyon train trip, a spectacular thing which I highly recommend. A few pics here:

Whenever anyone gets near the topic, I become a bore and suggest a contribution to my favorite charity, the Tarahumara Children's Hospital.

Father Verplancken, was the Jesuit priest behind the hospital. Knew him, one of the most memorable, saintliest human beings I have ever known.

Haven't been to that part of the world in a long time because it is dangerous. My friends there have made the offer to be guarded by their own AK 47-toting body guards, but I don't know them so I have refused. One day, I'll surprise them by making an unannounced trip.
