They already have normal speed trains running thru town.
High-speed trains are a whole different beast. More noise, more tracks, more bridges (no way you're using standard turnstiles to guard against cars being in the way of high-speed trains).

And considering that real estate along the tracks in Palo Alto is already ridiculously expensive, buying up more of that land for eminent domain is going to cost an arm and a leg.

And for what? If I want to get to L.A. from S.F. quickly, i'll just take Southwest Airlines. High-speed rail only makes sense in regions with high population densities. People living in L.A. and S.F. are all spread out.
