But this isn't the first time we've seen outbreaks of terroristic violence over silliness.

Actually, it isn't. There have been any number of attacks in Europe over depictions of Muhammad. What's particularly sad about this mess is that Charles Hebdo was in financial trouble and probably would have closed in the next year. People were tiring of their satirical presentations.
