I believe they have a cell separator polymer which keeps the ionic species apart in the fuel cell. It is the skin of the Tasmanian Wombat which is protected. They have smuggled enough out to start a breeding program in Kalimantan and will be supplying Ford with 200 MPG motors in 3 years.

Perhaps there is a ceramic catalyst that is cheap enought to make a competitive cell. We could use Rhenium which works and is dirt cheap.
Now we need Wombats. Avoid the flying kind.
