After 3 Arctic highs, the wave will retract...naturally. That means a warm up for U.S. It's like a big ocean wave crashing ashore, and then it pulls back.

However, the teleconnections are brewing. Rumblings in the stratosphere and western Pacific show another crash of cold air for the end of the month. Coldest of the season. To me, this is typical of a winter...call it January thaw followed by cold snap to take us to Groundhog's Day. We'll see what Phil has to say after that :)

Of course, changing from warm to cold means weather, so a large storm will accompany this change. Large midwest storm...severe weather in Gulf States, ice storm south of Mason Dixon, and snow north! Looking at Jan 22 with cold lingering through end of the month. Gulp! Being specific can get one into trouble! I'm trying.
