RMF,
And where could you find a WORSE place to build high speed trains than California???? The earthquake epicenter of the U.S.?
Of all the arguments against high-speed rail, the threat of earthquake activity should be on the bottom.

Look at Japan, for instance. The whole island is prone to earthquakes, yet they are well-known for their bullet trains.

It's just an engineering problem, one that has been addressed many times before.

P.S. - I'm still of the opinion that California high-speed rail is a complete boondoggle, and that the money would be better spent on local mass transit and higher-density development.
