I discovered I had the upper hand in Siemens Nigeria. The German engineers had very good and trained installers.

The microwave and multiplex systems just needed to be switched on and they worked. If anything went wrong, they switched it off and called someone for help.

In Brazil with the untrained, bad supervised installers, it was a miracle the equipment will even switch on. You'd call someone and he would say: "That day I was not working."

Your manager would say: "You are paid more to solve the problems caused by the ones who get paid less."

Thus I became an expert on troubleshooting. Before I even switched on I tested for short circuit. I pulled the power suppliers, before turning on the circuit breakers.

It was standard procedure for me. All signaling cable were pulled out and then signalling power was applied. then I would plug cables one by one.

A German was standing back to me and asked why you do that? I pointed to the Nigerians assembling cables and eating a mango: "Do you power up a 83A breaker with cabling made by that guy?"

He just said: aha!

There were a few A4 pages where I wrote the problems solution. It was kind of FAQ. Or the most common mistakes. So I could compensate for the bad installations and stull be as efficient as the Germans.

So if you get a guy from a place where things don't work well, he is more prepared for the 'shit happens' case.
