Larry, I agree with a number of your thoughts. Though, "In my current environment, the MIS department is too busy to solve user problems on a timely basis. Even if they were able to rely on NCs, they would have significant difficulties supporting the necessary applications.", makes me ask, "If MIS is too busy now with PCs, isn't making them LESS busy better?"

A lot of mainframe people, and I have worked with dozens, did not adapt well to the PC/LAN world. But who is talking about mainframes here???? This keeps coming up. I/we are talking about using high performance chipsets in a thin client machine that accesses Internet and intranet servers in a browser GUI. (enough buzzwords?<g>)

The NC can be blazingly fast, cheaply. Its processor is freed from having to be the general purpose device with appendages hanging all over it like the Pentium or any other PC chip. The NC processor can be optimized to run JAVA in a browser. Period. A PC must be the jack-of-all-trades because it never knows what is going to be loaded. This produces sub-optimal performance in almost all circumstances.

You may think it will force users to change what they feel and see. I believe that any changes will be transparent to a user used to a LAN. And MIS might get a chance to see their kids.

Scott
