Though Ahhaha made well known (which of course he would deny as not understanding what he had written) his claim that solar was not cost effective and that the only subsidies made them viable, I always thought he was lost in the 70's on this subject. Now he would define cost effective differently. his was grandiose, mine was my wallet. Certainly he thought that solar was not scaleable and over time I think that a good deal of articles have supported that view.

This flies in the face of people that I know personally that have invested in small scale home sites. I've done the math, Ive excluded subsidies, done the break even, witness the efficiencies of arrays 8 years and older. He's wrong. They are and continue to be cost effective {for an individuals wallet}.

BUT. at least in Ca. that has more to do with the rate structure of electricity then the physics of the arrays. The tiered systems where rates climb from .04 cents up to what I pay .36 cents has made investing in panels a 6 -8 year breakeven, far less time then the feared start of significant degeneration of efficiencies of these panels.

However the current proposals from utilities to to scale back the tiers, bumping up the small guy to .16 and cutting the top rate to .17 (YEA!) should lengthen break evens back to 10-12 years. Foolishness of clueless homeowners and there financial abilities of that article aside, the Solar industry continues to bring prices down and efficiencies up. Without Ahhaha around to comment or adjust to the real world its not fair to hold his convictions forever. Will Solar BE cost effective over time? I believe so. [ watching him turn in his grave, muttering in disgust about panzers and the unwashed] Oh well.
