I use this external USB hard drive to backup my MacBook Pro using the Apple Time Machine software. This is just an example to show you what Ron is talking about. There are many USB hard drives from many manufacturers in many densities (amount the hard drive can hold). I got the one terabyte hard drive because the internal hard drive on my computer can hold up to 500 gigabytes of data (I got an external USB backup hard drive twice the size of my internal PC hard drive):
