Slavery was an ugly thing, common to most all places and times throughout human history. The enslavement of blacks differed in one detail; For some time Northern Europeans and their descendants could rationalize that they were "only" committing it against an inferior people (A few centuries had dimmed the memory that theirs too had been in similar circumstance not long before).

Evidence existed to support that view. For some very complex reasons Africa lagged in developing a modern society, were primitive by any reasonable comparison. Thomas Sowell examined that phenomena in his " - AND CULTURES" trilogy.

But those enslaving blacks had something new germinating, derived from some combination of Christianity and attitudes about individual liberty then emergent in the Anglosphere. William Wilberforce and Co. crystallized that view in Britain, caused them to outlaw the slave trade. America's Founders prepped this nation to do the same not long after.

Black slavery remains a useful tool to stir passions in the ignorant and the stupid, most of who have no familiarity with the etymology of the term slave, let alone the processes involved in its abolishment, which, incidentally, began solely in the Anglosphere.

There are consequences to those uninformed excitements. One of the most reprehensible has been to make too many American blacks dependents, unequipped to pursue their potential and earn their place in civil society.

Shameful!
