He was maybe the last good Democrat.

I couldn't locate information on his other military service, but I heard long ago that Mike Mansfield had served in three branches of the military.

He was an old family friend, and sent my mother a Christmas Card every year. He wrote letters when my grandfather died, and we have several other of his letters in our family archives.
