One popular hypothesis of the big bang posits the idea that the universe as we know it is not the only universe which exists at the same time. If you think of our universe as an expanding bubble, then it could exist in a foam of other expanding (and popping) bubbles.

It's usually considered that the parameters of each bubble, which correspond to fundamental constants of physics, could be different at random in different bubbles. Only a universe whose physical parameters which are conducive to intelligent life would wonder about the nature of it's universe or any other.

These ideas are to the best of my knowledge still hypothesis with no experiment proposed which would currently settle the issue.
