NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - Online brokerage Motif Investing announced a $40 million investment by Chinese social networking company Renren Inc. RENN, -0.39% on Tuesday, and said Renren founder, Joe Chen, and former Goldman Sachs GS, +0.14% investment banking vice chairman, Carl Stern, have joined its board of directors. The cash infusion will be used to help fund the Silicon Valley-based trading platform's expansion abroad. Motif offers retail investors stocks and bonds arranged in low-cost themed bundles - or motifs -- that typically reflect broader concepts and investment styles. One such motif that has a 29.6% one-year return is designed around drug-patent cliffs, bundling together generic and over-the-counter drug companies like Actavis plc ACT, +0.13% and Perrigo Co. PRGO, +0.90%
