Bill H.: I believe that the Oppenheimer message has some facts wrong and omits others
1.) Iridium is not going after the masses, only the well travelled
businessman. As Readware stated, in a posting by Geoff on the
Loral thread, there are apparently more than enough well heeled
businessmen to whom cost is not an issue.
This is something that I argued over with the G* supporters
for some time. They were simply unable to see beyond their
own values. There are plenty of business people out there
who's time is worth far far more than $3 per minute, cost is
not an issue to them.
2.) There are enough individuals demanding this type of service
that capacity is far short of demand.
3.) The quality issue is very important and worth a lot. I* will
have no where near the voice delay of G* because I*'s satellites
are only half the distance from Earth of G*'s satellites. In
addition, G* calls over large distances must make numerous
bounces between Gateways and satellites.
4.) I am not sure where you got your info. on the satellite life of
5 years for I*, but the Iridium web site says 5-8 years. This
is probably a moot point because both I* and G* have already
submitted applications for 2nd generation systems that will
begin launching in 2000. Therefore, they both currently have the
same life.
