It's interesting that during the last ice age Beringia (Alaska & Siberia and the land between) was open steppe while a mile high glacier covered most of Illinois. The polar express on steroids and not due to a trace gas (CO2) as some folks like to say today. In fact, horses and camels originated in north America and crossed into Asia through Beringia.
