Wednesday December 17, 4:44 pm Eastern Time Deutsche Telekom to offer Internet telephony BONN, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Deutsche Telekom AG (NYSE:DT - news; DTEG.F) said on Wednesday it planned to offer telephone services via the internet next year, when European telecommunications markets will be opened to full competition. ''We plan to introduce Internet telephony during the course of next year at thoroughly favourable prices,'' Detlev Buchal, Telekom board member in charge of business and residential customers, told a news conference. Using the global Internet computer network it is possible to make long-distance and international calls at the cost of a local phone call. Development of the service has suffered because of the poor quality and reliability when compared to using the public phone network, but industry analysts expect the service to improve and become a large market in the coming years. Deutsche Telekom is one of the first of the world's major telecommunications companies to embrace the technology. It recently bought a stake in Israel's VocalTec, the leading maker of Internet telephony software.
