You have to realize I'm biased in favor of ADSL and now with TI buying Amati, I'm even more convinced there's a big market for the technology. Yes, the telcos in the US are slow --- partly b/c of FCC rulings that make it difficult for competitors to enter their markets (yes, I know, this wasn't the intention) --- but all have announced some ADSL roll-outs and are promising bigger deployment in '98. Apart from this, other countries are catching on and announcing deployments in advance of the US. For example, BCTel in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, has announced as has BC and several of the other smaller companies. Singapore has started deploying as has Hong Kong Tel and quite a few European countries. (France Tel, Telekom Finland, Belgacom, PTT Netherlands, etc) The market is just beginning. Watch for 1998 to be good growth and 1999 to be "Katy, bar the door."
If you want TI's take on this area of growth, call their IR department and see what they'll tell you. For a good feel on where the company's headed you can read the executive speeches from the last 12 months.
