But Intel in next year's first quarter is expected to finally see some competition in the notebook processor segment, a market that it has completely dominated for the past two years or so. Notebook vendors are currently readying new offerings based on processors from both Advanced Micro Devices and Cyrix, which should allow for the lower price tags, industry sources here said.
Leading Taiwanese notebook makers, including Acer, Arima Computer, First International Computer, and Mitac International are currently readying such notebook PCs for major OEM customers, the sources said. Some models will be based on a new mobile version of Cyrix's MediaGX processor, which carries a price tag lower than $100, they added.
Compaq Computer, which in February jump-started the sub-$1,000 market for consumer desktop PCs with its MediaGX-based Presario models, is one of the companies that is now looking at using the Cyrix chip in a notebook, one source said. Compaq has two notebook OEM suppliers in Taiwan: Arima and the Inventec Group, the source added.
New low-voltage versions of AMD's K6 chips will also appear in notebooks soon, said AMD chairman and CEO Jerry Sanders here earlier this month.
