The models keep on improving. In the 1990s they finally got to the point where theory managed to predict the weather of the entire globe for a month one year. Now by 'predict' they meant it rained when and where they expected it to and was about the right temperature. Their grid size was several miles on a side, so it was more difficult to model mountains, buildings and such. Computing power has grown a lot since then, and so has the accuracy.
