The way they are offering this now is an interim solution and, in my opinion, just a way to hype their image as a technological leader. In the larger scheme of things, calling cards, pin numbers, and consumer long-distance will do little for the bottom line.

What I do not understand is why a company that owns the facilities that QWST owns would move their voice over IP and not a data-link layer protocol (like frame or ATM). IP is cool only because it goes to the desktop (frame or ATM is equally attractive as a way of delivering packet voice at 6-8kbps instead of the old circuit-switchd DS0). QWST is not selling IP, but instead keeping it on the inside of their network and using it for cheap transport. This doesn't make sence. Frame or ATM allow QOS guarantees and more billing options.

Any idea what their larger data strategy is, because this smells of a whole lot of hype for a company that owns this much fiber.
