For some reason, every group that feels compelled to have an opinion about this tiny country, Israel, seems to focus on one set of voices when they talk about the place, as though that voice is the only one. Israelis and Jews generally love to babel about politics (except of course when they don't, lol), and there are myriad opinions and voices over there. Bibi is only one voice. Yes, he is the elected leader and yes the opinion polls for him were strong over the summer during the fight with Hamas. But he wasn't elected by a majority--not even close to it--he is in a coalition govt that was always tenuous, and while he is favored to win this election, it is by no means certain that he will actually win or that he will be able to form a govt.

So a guy who is his friend says he is doing his "sacred" duty--so what. Not many people in Israel actually believe in "sacred duties." In fact, it is a far more secular country than the US. The orthodox have an outsized voice in policy because of the nature of the parliamentary system there, just as Senators from low population states have an outsized voice in US politics because of the so-called Great Compromise in the Constitutional Convention. They are both miserable parts of each system, but they are extremely difficult to change because of vested interests and general stupidity.

You make way too much of an idiotic comment that is obsequious to a friend and leader and pandering to a constituency before an election.
