The Soviets still managed to score two more impressive 'firsts' before the American moon program finally moved ahead in 1967.
Two weeks after Korolev's death, Luna 9 finally became the first spacecraft to manage a soft landing on the Moon. Eight pictures were transmitted back before the batteries became exhausted on 6 February.
