The idea is that shoppers wearing Apple Watch will be able to opt into receiving recipes, offers, and alerts as soon as the device becomes available and the apps are updated. As with Apple Pay, The competitive landscape for iBeacon does not appear to be densely populated with non-niche heavyweights, though unlike Apple Pay, it does not appear that uptake of iBeacons (or any competitor) has been overwhelming to date.

Besides Samsung's Proximity, market hopefuls include Foursquare, Qualcomm's Gimbal, startups Datzing, AllUnite, and Swarm Portal, Motorola MPact, Philips' " intelligent LED in-store lighting", and Google Android's (as-yet-unreleased?) Nearby.
