Something I posted on Yahoo message boards......

When I left EI about two years ago, they were already engaged in the use of EDI. Forwarding information from airlines was being dropped into their systems back then and there was some projects with larger clients where commercial documentation was being exchanged via EDI.

You are correct that EI was using the HP3000 and as far as I know still is. In speaking with some of the competitors of EXPD
at the time I was advised that satellite offices were often serviced by a large mainframe with slow transmission over the phone
tie lines. EXPD's strategy at the time was to store all their data at satellite offices so that processing was more rapid.
Cranking through shipment processing in this business is really important and having access to shipment information rapidly allowed
quick service of customer calls.

When I left EXPD the company wa getting ready to tie customer services together into one system call EXPO which would allow national customers to get all information via multiple satellite offices in one centralized point. Ny guess is that is being provided by their web site. However you have to be a customer to utilize EXPO and that I am not.

One of the other major systems problems which existed at the time was settling shipment accounting between origin and destination offices. Some of EIs competitors had to make major accounting rwrite downs because of sloppy accounting. EI tidied up their own house by introducing an automated accounting system which seems to have cleaned up much of the confusion and the labor intensity that surrounded this problem.

Lastly I'm not too bullish on Fritz we all know what happened to their stock price when they went on a buying binge a couple
of years ago...... Acquisition is generally not a great method for success. EXPD tries to grow from within the term used is
"Organic Growth". It has proved to be successful so far. Not that EI doesn't make acquisitions.... last year they acquired their
exclusive agent in Ireland - Sea Sky. That has been EIs practice, to fill the gaps in their network... not to acquire where they
already have a presence in the hope that they can buy a customer list.....
