Hollande and Merkel NEED to play kiss kiss with Putin. He can cut off their gas. He's essentially their utility company. Its more than just that.............both countries have been selling stuff [mostly military armaments] to Russia for years. Their businessmen are unhappy that that lucrative trade is getting cut. As far as Obama "worrying" Putin....I don't think so. Obama is as far from a 'hardliner' as you can get. You would be surprised. Obama walks softly and carries a big stick. ISIS is finding out just how big and lethal that stick is.
