SOLUTION FOUND!!!

I found a USB portable battery pack which I had in a cabinet
I plugged it into my puter and then the other end into the tablet
left for a condolence call for a few hours
returned and tried to start it up
It did start

I had 13% left in the battery, so I plugged it into the wall directly
It is now charging, and after one day, is now 100% full

moral: make a record of all the programs on the tablet

I had even sunk to the depths of considering an Ipad, but just cant convince self to spend that kinda money
