i-node - Many of my family are in the healthcare field and your statement is simply the truth. Three of them are in hospital Administration and we have discussed this many times.

You said, "Lack of insurance has seldom meant lack of care for anyone in this country. That did happen on occasion, but rarely and could have been efficiently dealt with by much less invasive, disruptive legislation. One of the greatest attributes of the United States is that any person who needed medical care could get it. And if they got it it was likely to be the best available anywhere in the world. With few exceptions."

It is the law that no one can be turned away from a hospital emergency room. Our local hospital writes off millions of dollars a month due to patient's lack of insurance and inability to pay. The quality of the patient's care is not diminished due to lack of insurance or ability to pay. This is just simply the truth.
Lack of health insurance has not meant lack of health care in America for a long time.. These are two very different things.
The reason Americans who owned things and had savings etc. have health insurance is to protect their possessions. Unpaid healthcare charges are collectable from those who have possessions. Americans who had nothing have not needed health insurance to receive healthcare. Charges for healthcare are written off when those charges are not collectable.
In America if you are a citizen and you cannot work and you have nothing you can receive free housing, free food, free clothing, free home furnishings, free transportation, free spending money and free healthcare. A lot of it supplied by the Government, some of it supplied by healthcare industry and some of it supplied by charitable organizations and churches. What a country!!!!
The only thing needed to screw it all up is more management by an oppressive bloated Federal Government attempting to solve problems that do not exist just to increase its power over the citizens.
I believe our founding Fathers warned us about this many times. May God protect our country from its Government.
